Liberica coffee is a distinctive coffee species with a long connection to Philippine coffee culture. Philippine Liberica, also known in the Philippines as Kapeng Barako, is at the heart of the BARAKO.COFFEE project.
Why BARAKO begins with Liberica
BARAKO.COFFEE is a developing coffee identity built around Philippine Liberica, also known in the Philippines as Kapeng Barako. Rooted in Philippine coffee heritage, particularly the historic coffee-growing areas associated with Batangas, BARAKO is exploring the coffee's origin, character, quality, traceability and potential.
The project is documenting a journey from Philippine origin toward the UAE through sourcing exploration, green coffee, professional roasting, cupping, brewing and coffee development.

More than a name
The long-term BARAKO vision is to build a recognizable identity around Philippine Liberica while respecting origin, producers and the evidence required to support future quality and origin claims.
Origin matters
Batangas has an important place in the history and identity of Philippine Kapeng Barako. BARAKO is therefore exploring origin-specific sourcing and traceability rather than treating all Liberica as interchangeable.
The project does not currently claim that “BARAKO” is a legally protected geographical indication or established protected designation. Questions concerning geographical indications, collective marks or other forms of protection require future research, evidence and consultation with the appropriate institutions.
From the Philippines to the UAE
BARAKO is exploring how Philippine Liberica can be introduced responsibly to coffee professionals, hospitality businesses and coffee drinkers in the UAE while maintaining a clear connection to its Philippine origin.
